The miserable ones. Les Misérables (1862) is a novel published by Victor Hugo and is considered one of the best known works of the nineteenth century. The novel, in a romantic style, raises through its argument a reasoning about good and evil, about law, politics, ethics, justice and religion. The author confessed that he had inspired Vidocq, a French criminal who was redeemed and ended up inaugurating the French National Police, to create the two protagonists and that the history of his country had inspired him to place the historical context: therefore, the characters live the June rebellion (1832) and the subsequent political changes. In addition, the author analyzes the stereotypes of that moment and shows his opposition to the death penalty. In short, this novel is a defense of the oppressed, live in the historical place and moment they live.
